The Opportunity
This isn’t a “build internal tools” role — and it’s not an AI demo shop.
Assort is building AI agents that operate inside real healthcare workflows — systems that don’t just generate output, but take action in environments where correctness, reliability, and execution actually matter.
The company has already crossed the hardest threshold:
> real product-market fit with live, scaling customers
Now they’re in a high-leverage phase where:
- demand is accelerating quickly
- workflows are complex and evolving
- and engineering is the bottleneck to scale
The platform is already handling meaningful real-world volume, and the next engineers will help turn that traction into durable product and infrastructure.
You won’t be polishing UI or shipping low-leverage features.
> You’ll be building systems that directly impact how people access and navigate care.
Why This Role Stands Out
AI that actually executes
You’re building agents that perform real tasks across healthcare systems — not just chat interfaces or wrappers.
Real-world complexity
Healthcare workflows are messy, fragmented, and full of edge cases — solving them requires strong engineering judgment.
Fast, high-impact cycles
You’ll ship solutions in 6–10 week cycles, directly tied to real customer problems.
Customer-close engineering
You’ll work directly with user workflows and see your systems operate in production.
Early team, real ownership
Still small — engineers own meaningful surface area and shape how the system evolves.
What You’ll Do
- Build and ship AI-powered workflow systems for real healthcare use cases
- Design and implement backend systems and APIs supporting complex operational logic
- Partner closely with Agent Product Managers to translate requirements into production software
- Own work end-to-end: design ? build ? deploy ? iterate
- Handle messy, real-world data and edge cases across integrations
- Contribute across the stack when needed, with a clear backend lean
- Improve internal tooling and shared systems to increase engineering velocity
- Work on tight timelines, delivering high-quality solutions in 6–10 week cycles
- Collaborate with a high-caliber team across product, platform, and infrastructure
What They’re Looking For
This is a builder role. Stack matters less than ownership, speed, and fundamentals.
Core Requirements
- 1–5 years of experience in backend or full-stack engineering
- Strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript
- Experience building production-grade, scalable systems
- Strong engineering fundamentals and ability to ramp quickly
- High agency — comfortable operating in ambiguity and moving fast
Strong Signals
- Experience at a high-growth startup or strong product company
- Big tech experience with clear progression
- Background in:
- healthcare
- fintech
- legaltech
- AI
- or other workflow-heavy domains
- Experience with Retool
- Strong CS fundamentals (formal or self-driven)
- Track record of working on high-impact systems, not low-leverage UI work
What This Role Looks Like Day to Day
This role sits at the intersection of product engineering and implementation engineering.
Most engineers:
- work closely with an Agent Product Manager
- build custom workflow solutions for real customers
- operate on tight timelines
- own delivery end-to-end
Over time, some engineers may move deeper into platform or product work — but the common thread is:
>speed, ownership, and solving real problems with high-quality software
This Role Is a Great Fit If You Like
- Moving fast without sacrificing quality
- Owning real deliverables and outcomes
- Working close to users and real-world problems
- Building systems that have immediate impact
- Being part of a team that is scaling quickly and expects a lot
What Won’t Be a Fit
- Looking for remote or hybrid work
- Looking for a pure research or ML role
- Looking for a managerial path
- Coming from slow-moving or low-rigor environments
- Preferring highly scoped, low-ownership work
Logistics
- Location: San Francisco, CA (fully onsite)
