Data Engineering Manager
Location: Hybrid – Oklahoma City, OK (Onsite 2–3 days per week)
Contract Rate: ~$60/hour
Employment Type: Contract with potential for conversion to full-time
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Data Engineering Manager to lead a team of four data engineers within a healthcare data environment. This is a true people leadership role, focused on guiding and developing engineers while establishing structure, standards, and operational discipline in a growing data engineering function.
This role is ideal for a leader who thrives in greenfield or evolving environments, where processes and systems are still taking shape. While the position is not hands-on coding, the manager must possess strong technical credibility in modern data engineering practices and be comfortable reviewing architecture, evaluating pipeline design, and ensuring reliability and scalability across the team’s work.
Healthcare industry experience is required due to the regulatory, operational, and data governance considerations inherent in healthcare data integrations.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and develop a team of four data engineers, providing mentorship, direction, and performance management

Establish structure, standards, and operational best practices for a growing data engineering team

Review and guide the design of SQL and Python-based data pipelines to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance

Oversee data integrations across systems, including batch processing and API-driven data movement

Ensure appropriate monitoring, reliability, and data quality practices across pipelines and integrations

Partner with business and technical stakeholders to support healthcare data initiatives and integrations

Support regulatory and compliance considerations associated with healthcare data environments

Help remove team impediments and foster a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture

Evaluate technical designs and hold engineers accountable to architectural and operational standards

Operate effectively in ambiguous or evolving environments while providing clarity and direction for the team
Required Qualifications

7–10 years of professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or related technical roles

Minimum 1 year of direct people management experience leading engineers

Healthcare industry experience required

Demonstrated ability to lead and develop engineering teams, not just manage projects or act as a technical lead

Experience building structure and processes within early-stage or evolving teams

Strong technical credibility in data engineering concepts and architecture

Experience overseeing SQL-based data development and transformation work

Working knowledge of Python within data engineering or pipeline contexts

Experience supporting data integrations via batch processing and APIs

Ability to review and challenge technical designs while enforcing standards for reliability and scalability

Familiarity with regulatory and compliance considerations in healthcare data environments
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Healthcare Informatics, or a related field

Experience supporting healthcare platforms or systems in regulated environments

Experience collaborating with product teams, operational stakeholders, and cross-functional technology groups
